Dear Educators,
My name is Miss Adams. I am introducing a book in my classroom that discusses the Native American culture. I think it is very important to introduce different cultures to your students as well as learn about the different cultures of your students. If we, as educators, take the time to learn about our students and what background they come from we will be able to more effectively teach them. As educators’ it is our responsibility to develop a culturally responsive curriculum. This means that we are including the different cultures and backgrounds into everyday lessons and are building on students’ experiences. In an article I read about how when teachers use traditions and experiences rooted in the cultures of the students and infuse them into the curriculum in meaningful ways students’ achievement skyrockets. By doing this I think we can improve our students achievement as well as their experience of education as a whole.
The book I am using to begin this type of teaching is “SkySisters.” The book’s theme is tradition and culture. It depicts two sisters following the tradition of their mother and aunt. The sisters trudge through the snow to watch the Northern Lights. Through the journey you learn about the culture and background of the sisters as well as you learn about a tradition the sisters are partaking in. I plan to use this book in my classroom to not only talk about the Native American culture and other cultures and traditions, but to learn more about my students, what culture they come from, and what traditions they follow.
The book will not only help you learn more about your students but it helps you teach the standards. The standards at many different grade levels include culture. It is important for us to teach the standards and by adding this book to your lesson plan you will be covering several different standards in one. When you may have taught several different lesson plans to cover the different standards you can combine it into one lesson with this book and cover several standards at once.
I find this book to be very helpful in teaching students about culture. It is a great introduction to culture because it talks about the Native Americans, and you can use it to move into more in depth subjects of tradition and culture.
You should consider looking into this book and can find a few tasks and activities I chose to do with my students on this website.
Sincerely,
Miss Adams
